New Vegetables for 1999

Hybrid Tomato Sweet Cluster
This elite new variety has medium vigorous, indeterminate plants Tomato Sweet Cluster that should be tied to stakes or a fence. The fruits weigh 100 to 120 grams (about 4 oz.) and ripen to a deep, glossy red colour. They set on the plants in clusters of 6 to 8 fruits and have UG (uniform green) ripening for cluster harvest. In other words, the fruits ripen all over at the same time, rather that from the bottom up like green-shoulder tomatoes. The plants have short internodes and very good setting ability (otherwise, you would get clusters of 2 or 3 fruits rather than 6 to 8). Two of the keys of the performance of Sweet Cluster are its concentrated ripening of each cluster and good shelf-life, which prevents early breakdown of the first fruits in the cluster.
Sweet Cluster has very good flavour. Fruit shape is round to deep oblate, and the fruits are about 57-67 mm in diameter. Disease resistance/tolerance includes: V,F-1, RKN, ToMV, and all 5 races of Cladosporium. This is suitable for outdoor production, as well as greenhouses. Maturity or first harvest should occur about 67 days after transplants are set in the garden.

Early Crisp Hybrid Honeydew
Early Crisp isEarly Crisp Hybrid Melon the earliest maturing, large fruited, high quality, true honeydew melon we’ve ever seen.
Early Crisp hybrid has very vigorous plants with good cover. Fruits are large and round, weighing 7 to 8 pounds. Rinds have typical honeydew colour and

smoothness. The green flesh is very high in natural sugars, and is firm and crispy. Resistant/tolerant to Fusarium wilt, race 2, and cracking. Days to maturity: 80 days. This is a winner!

Midas Touch Hybrid Watermelon
Well, watermelon lovers, new Midas Touch variety is oh-so-sweet, and oh-so-crispy. It really is the ultimate in watermelon taste and texture. These yellow fleshed melons weigh about 14-15 pounds. The flesh is solid, sweet and crispy. Fruit shape is blocky-oval. The size is quite consumable without taking up too much fridge space. The attractive rind colour is light green with darker green stripes. Midas Touch has brighter flesh colour and larger size than either Yellow Doll or Yellow Baby, and little, if any, hollow-heart. Maturity is early - about 74-75 days.

Munchkin Broccoli
Munchkin is even compact than Small Miracle. The plants grow barely more than a foot tall, yet they produce heads the size of which you can see in stores. The head colour is deep blue-green, and you just know they are full of goodness when you lay eyes on them. They are very fine beaded and are exerted on the plants for easy harvest. Cut the main head and you’ll likely harvest good-sized secondary heads a little faster. First heads should be ready to harvest on only 60-62 days after plants are established in the garden. Eight to 12 inch plant spacing are recommended for more broccoli in less space.
