MOSQUITO CONTROL

BY BRUCE ZIMMERMAN

The constant annoyance of that buzzing in your ear and subsequent  bite of the mosquito has for the city dweller taken on a new importance with the threat of the West Nile Virus.  In the USA as  of September, 2006 there were 2171 reported illness from West Nile in 41 States with 74 being fatal. In Ontario last year more than 390 people became ill, 17 people died and 12 of those were in Toronto.

HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP PROTECT YOURSELF.

1. Avoid going outside especially in the early morning and evening.

2. Do not go outside when the wind speed is under 15 mph.

3. Do not wear dark clothing (Goethe is definitely out)

4. Make a fashion statement: wear a mosquito net jacket, or hat.

5. Apply DEET ( N,N-Diethyl-2-tolumide).  DEET is not recommended for children under two years of age. Repellents with thirty percent DEET will provide up to 6.5 hours of protection and repellents with ten percent DEET  will provide 3 hours of protection.

6. Avoid bushes and shrubs as this is a hiding /resting area for the mosquitoes particularly during the hottest time of the day. To reduce this risk these areas should be pruned to allow air and sunlight penetration.

7. In patio areas, Gazebos or screened in porches you can burn mosquito coils which contain the pesticide Permethrin. In enclosed areas you should only reenter the area after the fog (Fumes) have dissipated.

8. Use a Bug Zapper Light and lure all kinds of insects both good and bad to their deaths.

9. Use an Indoor Bug Light Sucks Them In And Drowns Themto attract all kinds of insects both good and bad to have them drown in soapy water with out the annoying zapping noise.

10. Burn numerous Citronella candles and lawn spikes in the immediate activity center. I have never found that these work well, but it helps.

11. Clean out all possible breeding sites such as your evestroughs or anywhere that water may sit for 3 to 7 days. Examples: Bird Baths, Tires, Old Containers and Kiddie Pools.

12. To control Mosquito larvae in fish ponds you just do not over feed your fish and the fish should eat the mosquito larvae.

 13. Fill in the low depressions on your property where water may stand for 3 to 7 days in wet weather.

14. Avoid storm drains and storm ditches.

15. Only live in municipalities which larvicide their standing water areas including catch basins with Methoprene or BTi
(Bacillus thurengensis israelensis) three times a year.
Uses Malathion

16. Spray your yard with Malathion for mosquitoes following the label directions. Malathion can kill some plants so be careful and read the label. Follow all safety precautions.

 17. Fog the city streets with insecticides. This is only  done by licensed professional applicators.

18. Use a Mosquito Magnet to capture Mosquitoes, Black Flies, No See Ums, 1 Acre Liberty PlusBiting Midges, and Sand Flies. The Defender model provides coverage for up to a 1/2 acre. The Liberty model provides coverage for up to 1 acre. The Liberty Plus model provides up to 1 acre of coverage and does not need to be plugged in to run.

THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES THAT YOU WILL NOT GET BITTEN OR THAT IF YOU DO GET BITTEN THAT YOU WILL GET THE WEST NILE VIRUS.
